Council

The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council (AFAC) originally began as the planning committee for the 1997 Fiber Arts Fiesta. Seven members from different guilds formed a group to devise a way to showcase their beautiful fiber art work. The success of that show cemented the foundation for the council and for future shows, and created the relationship with the participating guilds and the volunteer structure of the organization.

In 1999 the AFAC was incorporated as a non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting educational activities which encourage community interest and individual development in fiber arts, in cooperation with fiber arts related organizations in Albuquerque and New Mexico.

The Council accomplishes this primarily through its two major committee components- the Fiber Arts Fiesta Committee and the Fiber Arts Education Committee. These committees are made up of representatives from each of the participating guilds and led by a Council Director. They are responsible for organizing and presenting the Fiber Arts Fiesta and the Spring Show, held in alternating years.

The Council also provides funding to fiber artists through its scholarship program, available to local guild members as well as the general public.

We are an active and enthusiastic group of fiber artists who want to help ensure that fiber arts continue to be a viable art form for future generations.
